Speculation has grown over the future of the National Express West Midlands Bus Depot in Perry Barr, with rumours that Birmingham City Council have purchased the land under Compulsory Purchase powers.
The depot, which was at one time home to the Birmingham Outer Circle, which boasts the record of being the United Kingdoms longest urban bus service, is expected to close later this year according to sources.
It has been speculated that a new site for the routes and engineering facilities has been selected to replace the former Birmingham City Transport depot, which has been in place since 1932, however works have not yet commenced on this site.
It is believed that the existing site will be redeveloped in order to serve the Commonwealth Games in 2022, which Birmingham won the rights to host following a lack of interest from other cities.
It is unknown how this will affect services that operate from this depot, such as the Platinum services which operate along the Aston Expressway, but it will certainly be upsetting to some residents who see another part of Birmingham’s history be demolished.
Birmingham City Council have not yet commented on this, despite being approached.
